First International Scientific-Practical Conference on Social Work in Prisons Held in Lithuania

On 20 March, the Lithuanian Prison Service, in collaboration with Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), successfully hosted the inaugural International Scientific-Practical Conference on Social Work with Persons Serving a Prison Sentence. The conference, titled “Social Work with Persons Serving a Prison Sentence: The Importance, Development, and Future Prospects of the Profession”, brought together experts to discuss pressing issues in the field of social work within correctional institutions.

This landmark event explored key themes such as the intersection of criminology and social work, national and international approaches to supporting incarcerated individuals, and practical applications of social work methodologies. Scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from Lithuania and abroad shared their insights, both in-person and remotely, fostering a meaningful exchange of knowledge and best practices.

“This is the first international event of its kind organized by the Lithuanian Prison Service, highlighting our progress and shifting perspectives on the crucial role of social work in correctional settings,” stated Mindaugas Kairys, Director General of the Lithuanian Prison Service. “Social workers often become the only bridge between prisoners and their successful reintegration into society—restoring family connections, rebuilding social relationships, and offering critical support.”

Prof. Odeta Merfeldaitė, Dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Studies at MRU, emphasized the significance of social work in the rehabilitation process: “Social work with incarcerated individuals plays a pivotal role in their re-socialization and reintegration into society. In Lithuania, as in many other countries, the transformation of inmates’ behavior and mindset requires a long-term, multifaceted approach that involves both legal and social institutions.”

Social work with persons serving a custodial sentence is an important factor in ensuring their successful re-socialisation and integration into society. In Lithuania, as in other countries, legal and social institutions recognise that changes in the behavior and thinking of convicted prisoners involve a long and complex process that requires a comprehensive approach.

The conference underscored the increasing focus on human rights, re-socialization, and prisoner reintegration in Lithuania, aligning with European Union standards and international human rights frameworks. The European Court of Human Rights and other global organizations continue to emphasize the importance of ensuring the dignity and rights of individuals serving prison sentences. Lithuania is currently striving to comply with European Union standards and to ensure that prisoners are given the opportunity to prepare for a successful reintegration and resettlement upon release from prison.

Currently, 65 social workers operate within Lithuania’s correctional facilities, providing a broad spectrum of services, including psychological support, healthcare coordination, re-socialization planning, and evidence-based programs designed to foster behavioral change and enhance social skills.
