Representatives of the Lithuanian Prison Service Participated in the Annual Competition of Estonian Prison and Probation Professionals
On 27–28 May 2026, representatives of the Lithuanian Prison Service attended the 17th Annual Competition of Estonian Prison and Probation Professionals in Narva, Estonia, as invited observers.
The Lithuanian delegation consisted of Tomas Bartninkas, Governor of Marijampolė Prison, and Mindaugas Žirlys, Governor of Pravieniškės Prison No. 2. During the visit, they had the opportunity to observe the professional skills competitions organized by their Estonian colleagues and gain insight into the methods used to assess staff preparedness, teamwork, and practical competencies.
The annual competition is a longstanding tradition within Estonia’s prison and probation system, bringing together professionals from various institutions to engage in activities that promote professional development and cooperation. Participants competed in eight events designed to evaluate both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, including risk assessment, operational decision-making, and the use of specialized equipment. The competition aims to strengthen professional competencies, foster teamwork, and encourage the exchange of best practices across institutions.
The event began with an informal gathering of participants and guests, accompanied by team-building activities that promoted networking and cooperation. The main competition programme took place at the Narva Training Centre of the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences, where teams demonstrated their knowledge, skills, and readiness to respond to professional challenges. The event concluded with an awards ceremony and the official closing of the competition.
Participation in international professional events provides valuable opportunities to exchange experience, learn from innovative practices implemented in other countries, and strengthen cooperation among correctional institutions. The Lithuanian Prison Service highly values its long-standing partnership with Estonian colleagues and remains committed to further developing professional ties that contribute to the continuous improvement of operational standards and staff competencies.
