International DigiFree Project Partners Visit Lithuania to Exchange Best Practices on Inmate Reintegration
On 17 June 2026, the Lithuanian Prison Service welcomed partners from Turkey and Spain participating in the Erasmus+ KA210-ADU project "A Step Toward the Digital Future: Digital Literacy for Inmates" (DigiFree). The study visit focused on exchanging best practices in inmate education, digital literacy, resocialisation, and preparation for successful reintegration into society.
As part of the programme, the international delegation visited Kaunas Prison and a Halfway House operated by the Lithuanian Prison Service. During the visit, participants learned about Lithuania's approach to offender rehabilitation, vocational education, social skills development, and the support measures available to individuals preparing for their return to the community.
The meetings provided an opportunity to present the Lithuanian correctional system's experience in implementing educational initiatives that strengthen inmates' social, professional, and digital competencies. Discussions also focused on the role of digital literacy in modern correctional systems, the challenges of delivering digital education in custodial settings, and opportunities for expanding international cooperation in this field.
The DigiFree project brings together partner organisations from Lithuania, Turkey, and Spain with the shared objective of improving the digital skills of people in prison, enhancing their learning opportunities, and increasing their employability following release. The initiative is based on the European Union's principles of social inclusion, equal opportunities, and supporting second chances through education.
Participants highlighted that the exchange of international experience provides valuable insights into different approaches to inmate education and reintegration across Europe. Sharing practical knowledge and successful initiatives enables partner organisations to develop more effective rehabilitation measures that respond to the evolving needs of society and the labour market.
International cooperation remains a key element of the DigiFree project. By promoting the exchange of expertise and encouraging the development of innovative educational solutions, the project contributes to strengthening inmates' readiness for independent living, improving their prospects for successful reintegration, and supporting the creation of a safer, more inclusive, and socially responsible society.
