N. Goštautaitė Midttun, Chief Medical Doctor of the Lithuanian Prison Service, Presents Harm Reduction Programs at NordAN Conference in Riga
On 13 November, Nijolė Goštautaitė Midttun, Chief Medical Doctor of the Lithuanian Prison Service, took part in a panel discussion on harm reduction measures implemented across the Baltic and Nordic countries. She presented Lithuania’s practical experience and ongoing initiatives in this field during the Nordic Alcohol and Drug Policy Network (NordAN) conference, held in Riga on 13–14 November.
The session dedicated to drug-related issues covered a broad range of topics, including rapidly evolving drug markets, the diversity of harm reduction programs, the rollout of naloxone, and the crucial involvement of families and communities. Discussions also highlighted the importance of ensuring health protection while fully respecting human rights.
Participants were introduced to the latest research findings, with particular attention given to international and cross-sectoral cooperation, as well as data and information exchange. Several speakers referred to Lithuania’s alcohol control policy as a success story, noting the country’s significant reduction in alcohol consumption, alcohol-related mortality, and other related harm following the implementation of targeted measures.
The conference also examined the challenges associated with implementing harm reduction programs in diverse national contexts, touching on ideological, financial, and legal barriers. NordAN continues to work toward formulating regional recommendations and a common approach to advancing harm reduction efforts.
Now in its 25th year, the NordAN conference remains an important platform for comparing policy approaches, identifying obstacles to effective implementation, and fostering dialogue on building healthier and more resilient societies.
