Mindaugas Kairys, the new Director General of Lithuanian Prison Service is officially sworn-in
Mindaugas Kairys took the official oath of office as the new Director General of Lithuanian Prison Service (an official of the internal service system) at a solemn oath-taking ceremony at the Ministry of Justice. He has been awarded the rank of General of the Internal Service.
“As of 2023, with the merger of 10 prisons into a single legal entity – Lithuanian Prison Service, this new system is facing new challenges, some of the most important of which are the development of an open, modern, and advanced correctional system, the safeguarding of human dignity, the safety of society, and the return of individuals to society. I believe that the efforts of the new leader will continue to be focused on improving the correctional system, giving priority to the rehabilitation of inmates and their effective reintegration into society," said Minister of Justice Ewelina Dobrowolska at the ceremony.
In 2006, Mindaugas Kairys started his career within the Lithuanian Police. From June 2022 to March 2023, he was Chief of the Response Board of Kaunas County Police Headquarters. Prior to that, he held the position of Commander of Patrol Unit at Kaunas County Police Headquarters, and for six years he was a lecturer at the Department of State Border Protection at the Public Security Academy of Mykolas Romeris University. From March 2023 until now, he was the Deputy Director General of Lithuanian Prison Service.
Mr Kairys holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from Mykolas Romeris University, as well as a Master of Laws degree specializing in Law and Police Activities Programme at Mykolas Romeris University.
