Meeting with the local community at Vilnius Prison
Lithuanian Prison Service held a meeting at Vilnius Prison with representatives from the communities neighbouring the prison site. They learned about the changes being implemented in the prison as part of the Norwegian Financial Mechanism project.
Staff and elders from Rasos, Senamiestis and Naujininkai neighbourhoods, community chairpersons or representatives, as well as management and representatives from Lithuanian Prison Service and Vilnius Prison along with prison officers attended the meeting.
“Our activities are often surrounded by myths or legends that don’t always reflect reality. We undertake various measures and activities to raise public awareness of what happens beyond prison walls in the correctional system”, said Mr Mindaugas Kairys, Deputy Director General of Lithuanian Prison Service.
The residents learned about the objectives of the Project Development of Quality Based Lithuanian Correctional Service System, the development of infrastructure at Vilnius Prison, and the activities of the halfway house. The concerns of the community were also addressed, and questions were answered. Such meetings are expected to continue in the future.
Lithuanian Prison Service implements the Project Development of Quality Based Lithuanian Correctional Service System (PDP 3) under the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms programme Justice and Home Affairs 2014-2021.
