Lithuanian Prison Service staff and students join the Erasmus+ international community

Lithuanian Prison Service (hereinafter referred to as LPS) has experienced a busy and successful first half of the year. For the first time, LPS has joined the Erasmus+ programme and initiated three projects. Notably, LPS recently became a partner in the strategic partnership PROMOTE (Promoting Integrated Professional Development for Prison Practitioners in Vocational Excellence for Offender Reintegration), collaborating with 17 other institutions from 10 European countries.

The PROMOTE project is funded under the Erasmus+ initiative Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE). Over the next four years, the project aims to develop an integrated approach to continuous in-service training for professionals within the correctional system. The project will focus on establishing centres of professional excellence, which will unite practitioners from various fields and equip them with the necessary tools and methodologies they need to develop the specialized skills required to address work-related challenges effectively.

This initiative focuses on developing a pilot professional learning mechanism for practitioners working within or in collaboration with the justice system, aimed at enhancing the successful reintegration of offenders into society. The primary objective is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience, promote participation in research, and emphasize the individual learning experiences and skill enhancement of practitioners. The project aspires to empower practitioners to become active participants in their own professional development and problem-solving processes. Furthermore, it aims to bridge the gap between various levels of vocational training, ensuring that all professionals within the correctional system have access to resources that foster relevant professional competencies.

Two more Erasmus+ projects for learning mobility of staff and students start in June.

LPS has been awarded funding for the implementation of two significant projects: the vocational training project "Building Professional Skills Through Practical Training in Prison Establishments" and the adult education project "Building Correctional Staff Competences Through Development of a Dynamic Security Model".

These projects will include group mobility of LPS students and staff, as well as job shadowing visits to prisons in Sweden, Estonia, Belgium, Austria and Ireland. 34 members of LPS community will participate in these mobility activities between September 2024 and June 2025. Two Irish colleagues have also been invited for a follow-up expert visit.

Through active international engagement in the field of education, LPS hopes that the professional cooperation and the experience of the participants would contribute to the continuous modernization of the organization and the professional development of the vocational education system.
