Lithuanian Prison Service Officials Gain Insights into the Estonian Correctional System
On 24-27 February, a delegation from the Lithuanian Prison Service visited Estonia to gain a comprehensive understanding of the Estonian correctional system. The visit focused on resocialisation programmes, prisoner employment, security management, and correctional infrastructure.
The delegation visited Tallinn, Viru, and Tartu prisons, where Estonian officials provided an in-depth overview of the inmate population, operational challenges, and security concerns. Lithuanian officials were given the opportunity to examine working conditions, available tools, and the information system used for work organisation within Estonian correctional facilities.
As part of the visit, Lithuanian representatives also toured the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences (EASS). This institution is unique in Europe for its comprehensive internal security education, covering police, border protection, rescue services, prison service, tax, and customs. The Prison Service College within EASS stands out as the sole institution providing professional training for Estonian prison officers.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation remains a key priority. In March, six frontline and middle-level resocialisation and security officers from the Lithuanian Prison Service will travel to Estonia as part of the Erasmus+ project, Enhancing the Competences of the Staff of the Correctional System through the Development of a Dynamic Security Model. During the mobility week, these officers will observe Estonian prison operations and further enhance their expertise.
