Lithuanian Prison Service Medical Staff Participate in Nordic Institutions and Organisations Mobility Programme Training in Iceland
As part of the Nordic Institutions and Organisations Mobility Programme project, funded by the Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers in Lithuania and the Lithuanian Prison Service, a delegation of Lithuanian Prison Service medical professionals participated in an international training course titled “Effective Strategies for Healthcare Leaders: Enhancing Well-Being at Work / Health-Promoting and Sustainable Leadership.” The training took place on 7–8 May at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík.
The Lithuanian delegation included Dr. Nijolė Goštautaitė-Middtun, Chief Medical Doctor of the Lithuanian Prison Service; Inga Laniauskienė and Loreta Vasiljevienė, Specialists of the Health Care Coordination Unit; and Rasa Ivanauskienė, Specialist of the Primary Health Care Unit.
The training, organised by the NGO Nordic Institute for Advanced Education in Occupational Health (NIVA) from Finland in collaboration with the University of Iceland, equipped participants with evidence-based leadership strategies to promote employee well-being and strengthen organisational resilience. The course combined theoretical insights with practical tools, focusing on the relationship between leadership, psychological health, workplace quality, and sustainability in healthcare institutions.
"The biggest challenge in creating a healthier working environment as part of ongoing reforms lies in turning evidence into practice and building mental health competences sustainably. While many effective measures are already well known, even resource-rich systems struggle with staff turnover, burnout, and low morale. Organisations that succeed tend to do so by embracing change with patience, creativity, and a rational use of resources," said N. Goštautaitė-Middtun.
The newly acquired knowledge will support the Lithuanian Prison Service in addressing healthcare challenges more effectively and fostering a healthier, more supportive working environment for medical professionals within the correctional system.
