First Erasmus+ Mobility Visit: Lithuanian Prison Service Staff Completes Internship in Sweden

The Lithuanian Prison Service recently conducted its first Erasmus+ mobility visit, a vocational and adult training initiative aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of correctional staff. From October 28 to November 1, five Lithuanian Prison Service officers engaged in a week-long job shadowing program at Fosie and Tygellesjö prisons in Sweden.

During the Mobility Week, Lithuanian participants gained hands-on insights into Sweden’s correctional practices, with a focus on the training and daily operations of Swedish prison officers, and the broader Swedish prison and probation system. Hosted at the medium-security Fosie Prison and the low-security Tygellesjö open facility, participants explored various operational elements, including prison officer duties, daily routines, supervision protocols, special-needs wards, and recently developed infrastructure. The Lithuanian prison officers were actively involved in daily routines, directly observing and contributing to the operations.

The Erasmus+ project aims to support the professional development of Lithuanian correctional staff and students by fostering skills that will underpin a dynamic security model within the Lithuanian correctional system. The job shadowing program covered a range of topics essential for effective correctional operations: organizational structure, professional conduct, the use of specialized security measures, teamwork, and efficient communication, all in line with the principles of dynamic security.

Project participants expressed that the visit not only offered valuable professional exchanges but also instilled a sense of international community and shared responsibility among correctional professionals.

“We believe these activities significantly enhance the skills of our staff and students while also positively impacting the performance of our institutions,” said Mindaugas Kairys, Director General of the Lithuanian Prison Service. “The outcomes of this international collaboration will support the development of a dynamic security framework, promoting a safe and constructive environment for both learning and work within the Lithuanian Prison Service.”

The Lithuanian Prison Service encourages further staff involvement in future Erasmus+ mobility projects.
