Czech Parliament Delegation Visits Vilnius Prison

On 7 April, a distinguished delegation from the Mandate and Immunity Committee of the Lower House of the Czech Parliament visited Vilnius Prison of the Lithuanian Prison Service to explore and understand the Lithuanian approach to correctional practices.

This visit comes as the Czech Republic is currently in the process of drafting a new Criminal Code and seeking insights into best practices and policies from international counterparts. A key focus of the visit was learning about Lithuania’s processes for assessing prisoners seeking reductions in their sentences, as well as the factors influencing decisions on adjusting detention conditions. The group also sought information on Lithuania’s provision of medical services within prisons, as well as the integration of psychologists and social workers into the correctional environment. The delegation toured the newly established TOG unit, which opened just last week and is dedicated to working with reoffenders. Additionally, the delegation was introduced to the prison’s Employment Centre.

The delegation included Helena Válková, Chairwoman of the Committee, Pavel Staněk, Vice-Chairman, along with members Tat'ána Malá, Radek Rozvoral, Jan Čech, Head of the Committee's Bureau, and Czech Ambassador to Lithuania Ales Opata.
