Construction Permit Obtained for the Modernisation of Vilnius Prison
The Lithuanian Prison Service has received official approval for the modernisation of Vilnius Prison, marking a significant step toward improving detention infrastructure in line with the Government’s objective to provide over 700 beds in modern cell-type accommodations.
Within the framework of the project “Development of a Quality-Based Lithuanian Correctional Service System” measure "Technical Design for the Reconstruction of the Residential Building at Rasų g. 8, Vilnius and Project Supervision Services “, funded by the EEA and Norway Grants 2014–2021, major preparatory steps have been completed: project proposals, necessary publicity actions, the technical design of the construction, special and general expertise of the project. The process culminated in the issuance of a construction permit by the Vilnius City Municipal Administration on 29 May.
The approved renovation project will convert the existing dormitory into a purpose-built cell-type facility, offering both single and double cells for a total of 170 inmates. This transformation will significantly enhance prison security, ensure better detention conditions, improve the working environment for prison staff, and contribute to increased public safety.
Funding for the construction is planned to be secured under the upcoming EEA and Norway Grants funding period.
