Clay-ceramics activities foster joy among inmates
Pravieniškės Prison No. 1 of the Lithuanian Prison Service is actively implementing clay-ceramic workshops to enhance the vocational skills and employability of inmates. This initiative is funded by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism Project Development of a Quality-Based Lithuanian Correctional Service System.
The program sessions quickly reach full capacity. To accommodate the growing interest, additional hours are being scheduled. Participants are currently creating a variety of ceramic items, including bowls, souvenir pieces, vases, and candlesticks. Each item is carefully dried, fired in a specialized oven, and then glazed. The prison plans to organize an exhibition showcasing the inmates' creations.
The clay activities have a notably positive and calming effect on inmates. Irma Karpavičienė, Coordinator of the Resocialisation Unit at Pravieniškės Prison No. 1, observes that the sessions are characterized by a peaceful atmosphere, with inmates displaying deep focus and concentration.
The inmates' active participation, engagement in meaningful activities, and teamwork help to build their self-confidence, facilitate their social reintegration, and contribute to their successful resocialization.
